As Netflix begins promoting the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, a recent viral report alleging that Millie Bobby Brown filed a bullying complaint against co-star David Harbour has put the streaming giant on the defensive. Despite the growing attention, neither Netflix nor the stars involved have publicly addressed the claims.
Smiling at the Premiere
Brown and Harbour appeared together at the world premiere in Los Angeles on Thursday, posing cheerfully for photos as the show’s final season promotion continued. Their united front contrasted sharply with the online speculation that has surrounded the cast all week.
Creators Decline to Discuss Allegations
On the red carpet, the show’s co-creator Ross Duffer was asked by The Hollywood Reporter about the reported complaint. Standing beside his brother and fellow creator Matt Duffer, he declined to comment on behind-the-scenes issues but emphasized the long-standing bond shared by cast and crew.
“We’ve been doing this for 10 years with this cast, and at this point they’re family,” he said. “Nothing matters more than having a set where everyone feels safe and happy.”
Producers Stress Safe Working Environment
Series director and executive producer Shawn Levy similarly avoided addressing specifics but said ensuring safety and respect on set has always been a priority.
“You have to create a respectful workplace where everyone feels comfortable and safe,” Levy told THR.
He added that stories circulating online range from “wildly inaccurate” to overly speculative, reiterating that the cast and crew have always treated each other as family.
Daily Mail Report Sparks Controversy
The controversy erupted following a story published by the UK tabloid Daily Mail, claiming Brown, 21, filed a harassment and bullying complaint against Harbour, 50, before shooting began on season five. The report suggested the complaint contained multiple pages of allegations, though none related to sexual misconduct.
According to the outlet, Netflix spent months reviewing the claims. The report also stated that Brown worked with a personal representative on set during filming of the final season. Production reportedly concluded in December.
As of Thursday’s premiere, neither Netflix nor representatives for Brown and Harbour had responded to requests for comment.
Uncomfortable Timing Ahead of Final Season
The allegations arrive at a particularly sensitive moment for Netflix. The company is rolling out an extensive promotional campaign for Stranger Things’ final chapter — expected to be among its biggest releases to date.
In the series, Brown portrays Eleven, a girl with extraordinary abilities, opposite Harbour’s character, police chief Jim Hopper, who becomes a protective father figure. Their emotional, often complicated relationship has become central to the show’s appeal.
Harbour Once Called Bond with Brown ‘Protective’
Harbour has previously spoken warmly about his relationship with Brown. In a 2021 podcast interview, he noted that meeting her before her rise to global fame made him feel especially responsible for her well-being.
“I worry about her and the fame and all that she has to struggle with,” he said.
Brown Has Spoken About Bullying Before
Although Brown has not addressed the new allegations, she has been vocal about bullying in the past. Earlier this year, she shared an emotional message on Instagram while promoting her Netflix film The Electric State, criticizing online trolling and intrusive commentary about her appearance.
“I started in this industry when I was 10 years old,” she said, as reported by Today. “For some reason, people can’t seem to grow with me… because I don’t look the same as I did in season one, I’m now a target.”
Calling some media coverage “bullying,” Brown urged commentators to “do better” and stop policing her image as she transitions into adulthood.

- Part 1 – Four episodes on November 26

Netflix has not indicated whether the recent claims will impact the promotional campaign.
